When is Your Independence Day?
By Paul Pettypiece

The great irony of celebrating our nations' independence is that most of us who live
in these countries are ourselves dependent -- on insecure jobs for our paychecks,
on banks who hold our mortgages and credit card debt, on a consumption-based economy for our retirement, on the government and other institutions for our
financial security.

The great opportunity in a world changing from an industrial economy to an information economy and becoming every day more the global village, is the technology that allows us to be world citizens and independent citizens at the
same time.

So what holds us back from being independent? In a word, ourselves. We have become prisoners of our own consumption, fearing that we don't know what tomorrow will bring and therefore won't have enough money or stuff and fearing that if other people around the world become more prosperous and independent, that it will take away from our own well-being.

In two of the richest countries of the world, we have developed a scarcity mentality that breeds fear, mistrust and greed. How unfortunate!

And worse -- we've stopped believing in ourselves, our dreams and in our ability to make a difference.

We have in each of us the ability and resources to not only create unbelievable financial independence for ourselves but prosperity for the whole planet. It has been said that most of us live lives of quiet desperation wishing that the right opportunity comes along to save us from ourselves.

Quoting from Dr. Jeffrey Lant's recent newsletter:
' Remember the scene from 'On The Waterfront' where Marlon Brando says the famous line, 'I coulda been a contender'? No one who hears those words could
fail to be moved by how sad they are.
Today, millions of people worldwide will utter their version of this depressing line and say, 'I coulda been rich.' It's one of the most disheartening lines in any language and one that sums up the lives of millions of unhappy people.'

Many of us believe that prosperity and abundance means being able to buy more stuff. The fact is, prosperity gives us the ability to write our own destiny, achieve
our greatest potential, and more importantly, it gives us the opportunity to enrich
the lives of others and make the world a better place.

On a global level, prosperity gives us the opportunity to enrich all nations so they may all celebrate independence.

Prosperity, however, is not the only measure of enrichment and abundance. More important is accepting in our hearts that we are all brothers and sisters on this planet and that, as much as we can share with others, they have as much to share with us.

Abundance also means mobilizing our own talents, qualities and inner resources as well as mobilizing the same in others.

There are sufficient opportunities and resources on earth today that every person on this planet can be prosperous. Determine your mission, set your goals and take action.

There has never been a better time to celebrate your own independence day. Seize the moment.
